Power of Protein
Posted by: Whitney on July 14, 2009I know I’m not the only one trying to stay fit during these summer months. Chances are, many of you have a daily routine of cardio or endurance workouts keeping you busy.
How do you maintain the motivation to continue? The hardest thing for me, is waking up the morning after a run and not being able to get out of bed. I used to think my soreness was a product of skipping cool-down stretches. Come to find out, Runner’s World magazine says I can change my diet to make my muscles happy!
That’s right, increasing protein intake speeds muscle growth and helps rebuild the muscle fibers stressed during physical activity.
The fitness gurus report runners should eat .45-.72 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily. For a 165-pound runner, that’s 75-120 grams of protein each day.
Talk about great news! Protein is easy to prepare, and can be a lean source of nutrients. In fact, there are 29 cuts of beef classified as lean by the USDA.
Of the 29 lean cuts, my favorite is top sirloin, which has 25.8 grams of protein in 3 ounces. I like to grill it whole, make kabobs, slice it for salads, fajitas, and more using these recipes.
Beef is also offers nutrients like zinc, iron, and B-vitamins. My only question now: is it lunch time yet?
