Checkoff Programs in Action

Posted by: Melissa on April 9, 2009

David Dick, chair of the Public Opinion and Issues Management Group for the beef industry and beef producer from Sedalia, Mo., says that although issues management is a “behind-the-scenes” program area, it plays a critical role in the overall success of a producer’s operation. Dick uses the BSE case in December 2003 as a prime example of how checkoff dollars were invested to prepare for the crisis, be proactive in the industry’s response and put in place procedures and policies for the future in order to sustain the longevity of the industry. Dick says that’s just one example, but points out the importance of the program area.

Dick also explains that not only are the effects of issues management seen on a national level, but they drill down and help the bottom line on his own farm. He personally sees the results of issues management in action.
